About ITS

International Thespian Society Logo

The International Thespian Society is the only theatre honor society for middle and high school students in the United States. Affiliation brings credibility and distinction to students, theatre programs, and schools. It is a visible, positive symbol of the quality of your theatre program.

ITS recognizes, rewards, and encourages student achievement and celebrates the work of students in all aspects of theatre – performance and production. Each student is honored on a national level and gains access to opportunities and resources beyond those of their school.

How It Works

The International Thespian Society group at each school is known as a troupe, and it is led by a troupe director. A point system helps track student work, as high school and middle school students earn induction and the designation of Thespian or Junior Thespian, respectively. Students go on to earn progressively higher honors.

A chapter is established to support the mission of the Educational Theatre Association within a specific geographic area, such as a state or province. It is led by a chapter director who is supported and assisted by a chapter board. The chapters provide local and regional support for adult members, Thespians, and Junior Thespians.

The International Thespian Officers (ITO) are elected by their peers to represent the student voice in the Educational Theatre Association and International Thespian Society.

What ITS Members Say...

Why wouldn’t you want to have a Thespian troupe at your school? I’m a product of a Junior Thespian troupe and a high school Thespian troupe. I’ve taught at three schools and created Thespian troupes for every single school because it is the opportunity to allow students to have true honor. … To have an organization that really recognizes them is an immeasurable opportunity.
