International Thespian Festival Registration Guide

A group of teachers stand in line to check in at kiosks at the International Thespian Festival registration area of ITF 2023.

Everything you need to know before sitting down to register yourself and your students for EdTA's premier teen theatre festival.

You’ve waited a whole year, and now you’re starting to plan your trip to Indiana University for the 2024 International Thespian Festival (ITF). Students are buzzing about the chance to spend a week with thousands of fellow theatre lovers from around the world. Perhaps you even have some qualified students moving on to the final round of competition in the International Thespian Excellence (or Thespy®) Awards. Or maybe you’re just looking forward to seeing the amazing one-acts and main stage shows highlighting outstanding high school drama offerings from the past year.

Whatever the case may be, getting you and your students to ITF does take a little bit of preparation and legwork, as there are a lot of moving pieces and parts to the International Thespian Festival registration process. Here, we’ll break down what you need to do before it’s time to register your group so you avoid the last-minute scramble and unnecessary panic.

Account Updates Needed for ITF Registration

To expedite the International Thespian Festival registration process and ensure you’re shown the appropriate fees and add-on activities for yourself and your students, please update your EdTA account information and troupe roster (if applicable) at

  • Troupe Directors must induct eligible students before registering them for ITF at the discounted Thespian rate. It may take up to 7 business days for your troupe roster to reflect changed induction status in our system, so it’s best to do this well before you’re ready to register students.
  • Parents/guardians chaperoning students who are not attending with a Thespian troupe must create a MyEdTA account before beginning the registration process. If you’re registering a student/students affiliated with an active Thespian troupe, you will need to enter the troupe number at the time of registration, which will populate the troupe roster for you to select students from. If the school your student(s) attends does not have an active Thespian troupe, you’ll select non-member pricing at the time of registration, and enter the attendee information manually.

Plan to Meet the Adult-to-Student Ratio

Students attending ITF must be accompanied by chaperones – troupe directors, parents/guardians, or other group leaders over the age of 21. One chaperone must be designated and register as the primary contact (this is usually a troupe director, but it can be any adult traveling with students). Then, that adult will be able to add student attendees and additional chaperones (as needed) to their ITF registration.

Note: All registration groups are required to have one (1) adult chaperone for every eight (8) students within a single registration group. Groups may not share chaperones to meet the 1:8 requirement.

Chaperones and students must register for the same housing accommodations (i.e., chaperones are not permitted to stay off campus if students they are chaperoning are staying on campus).

More information about what type of registration a chaperone should select can be found in the ITF FAQ.

International Thespian Festival Registration Materials

After logging into your MyEdTA account, ensuring your account details are up-to-date, and inducting students and updating your troupe roster (if applicable), gather the following information for each attendee you will be registering. Do this well in advance of the deadline, and allow time for students, parents/guardians, and chaperones to get their information to you.

Wait! There's More for Thespy® Participants

If your students are participating in the final round of the International Thespian Excellence Awards (Thespys for short) either in person or virtually, you’ll need to complete one more step after your event registration is finished: submitting your students’ application in OpenWater, the Thespy adjudication platform. A link to the application will be found in registration confirmation email sent after you complete ITF registration.

Don’t overlook this crucial step, as it’s how EdTA receives the information needed to schedule and adjudicate your students’ Thespy entries. Complete one form for each entry (e.g., solo, duet, group, or technical presentation), not per student.

Pro Tip: You’re not finished until you click Save and Finalize! You must submit this form by May 15 to secure slots in the adjudication schedule.

For detailed information on how to complete your students’ Thespy applications, visit the blog post below.
