Junior Thespian Festival—a three-day celebration of theatre for middle school students (grades six through eight) and their teachers—provides Junior Thespians with opportunities to develop their theatre skills, make new friends, and share the theatre experience with their peers and teachers from around the country.
Junior Thespian Festival offers a variety of functions for your middle school students to demonstrate their talents and to explore new theatrical skills. There are opportunities for Thespian troupes to perform shows on the Festival main stage, in addition to Individual Events performances for constructive feedback. You and your students can choose from a variety of workshops taught by trained professionals to help further their creativity.
Unique to the Junior Thespian Festival is the Team Play-Create program. Junior Festival participants work in randomly-divided teams during the three-day event to create short play presentations that are staged for the entire Festival delegation during the closing ceremonies. This program gives delegates a chance to work with students from other schools, allows them to be part of an original work, and lets them shine in their area of strength—whether it’s performance, writing, or technical support—while accepting new challenges.
At the 2012 Junior Thespian Festival, we will reinforce that theatre is a collaborative art form. From onstage to backstage, directing to writing and lots more in between, it takes many different skills to create the final theatrical result; that is why our 2012 Festival theme is “Sounds Good to Me!” We will examine the many different types of musical instruments and the way performers must work as an ensemble to create an overall harmonious product that (hopefully) sounds good! Each randomly-divided Team Play-Create team will be given a different instrument around which they will create their play presentation.
