The Mainstage at the Festival

Every year, about ten high school theatre programs are invited to share their work on the Thespian Festival Mainstage. The number of invited shows varies slightly from year to year, depending partly on Festival attendance.

The Festival Mainstage is a showcase for the best in school theatre. Invitations to perform are extended during the preceding school year after an application and screening process conducted by Festival representatives. Get  information on how to have a show screened.

Musicals, comedies, drama—theatre of every style and shape—are all eligible to be considered for a Mainstage invitation. Mainstage shows play in the Lied Center, a 2,100-seat proscenium house. If Festival attendance warrants, a second Mainstage in the 800-seat Kimball Hall will be used.  Schools may be asked to perform in both.

The early show

One or two shows are selected each year for early show slots on the first day of the Festival. Early show performances are usually in the Kimball Theatre.
