I am looking for some good comedy and farce plays that are not typically done. Any suggestions?

Are The Real Inspector Hound by Stoppard and Black Comedy by Shaffer too usual? I think both are tremendously clever. I saw Hound over the weekend at the Georgia Thes Con and the school did a fantastic job of adding to the already witty script. It looked like the actors loved what they were doing and each of them (8 I think) had a chance to shine.

Habeas Corpus by Alan Bennett is a classic; originally had Alec Guiness in the main role. Very clever, very witty. Alan Ayckbourn is also pretty good for farce, and he's written so many you could probably find one that was not too 'usual.'

A great one is "Exit the Body" by Fred Carmichael.  Samuel French has the rights.  I did it in HS, and then they remounted it about 7 years later at my old HS.  It was always a hit with the audiences, and such great characters.

Most of Tim Kelly's stuff is great for HS (and even earlier). He was also nice enough to skew most of his casts heavier female. We had a great success last fall with "Curse of the Werewolf" available from Dramatic Publishing.

This fall, as part of a night of one-act shows, we mounted "Paper or Plastic?" by Werner Trieschmann. (Also Dramatic Pub). Zany, silly, Pythonesque at times. Just don't believe the "Approx. 40 min run time" on the description page. Paced properly, you *might* get 25-30 out of it. Still, a lot of fun.

I would highly recommend David Zarko's play The Bishop Comes to Visit.  My former colleague, retired drama teacher Mary Jo Bowes directed this last school year at the senior high from which I just retired.  Check out David's website atwww.davidzarko.us --just google him.  It is a delightful farce and we staged it in the round --  but it works proscenium best.
Good luck

You might look at Georges Feydeau Farces, A Flea in her Ear or A Little Hotel on the Side or HOtel Paradise.  He wrote at the turn of the last century and was the model for farce.  Many of the farces written for youth such as those by , Tim Kelly (sorry whoever is a fan), really talk down to students and place puns or sight gags ahead of plot or character.  Feydeau is writing for adults (but not dirty).

There is a trilogy of farces by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten that have a lot of good parts for women and are hilarious.  My favorite is Christmas Belles, but they also wrote Dearly Beloved, and Southern Hospitality. All are available through Dramatists Play Service. Happy Reading (literally)  :)

I have directed both Ken Ludwig's Lend Me a Tenor and Michael Frayn's Noises Off at the high school level. They're both great farces and the students really learned a great deal about the genre in both instances. You will need to make some modest edits regarding dress/undress and language, dependent upon your audience and community.

Personally, I would never touch the silly farces purportedly aimed at the high or middle school level.

I found "The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler" by Jeff Whitty http://www.dramatists.com/ a few years ago and had a wonderful experience directing the show.  See review of the production below.   The kids loved it!
